Crossmodal Installation
By Sebastian Tedesco, Maria Zegna and Bruno Mesz.
“Huelo Huelo ¿Qué ves?” (Smell it Smell it. What do you see?) Is a multisensory installation that makes use of the “Huelo”(Smell it), a device designed to combine an aroma with the tasting of a liquid in the context of experiments on the sensory phenomenon of transmodality.
This device has been developed in the research project “Transmodal Correspondences” directed by Bruno Mesz and Sebastián Tedesco at the MUNTREF Center for Art and Science of the National University of Tres de Febrero in Argentina. For more information about this project: CLICK HERE.
In this installation, “Huelo” is used to create two sensory experiences through pairings between flavor, aroma, sound and vision, the latter being stimulated through the presence of an object of use, which evokes or reinforces the sense of certain associations.
Pairing 1:
Cava: Grand Codorniu Reserva Chardonnay Brut Nature
Aroma: Orange / Violet / Palo Santo
Sound: Re-mix generated from Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess“.
Object: Antique toy
This is an affinity pairing that seeks to recreate the melancholy of lost childhood evoking times of our past through a re-mix of Ravel, the perfume of violet and the wood of the palo santo, together with the orange that evokes immediately times of our past and the cava that brings us back to the present and allows us to feel “saudade” (“nostalgia” in portuguese).
Pairing 2:
Cava: Grand Codorniu Reserva Chardonnay Brut Nature
Aroma: Birch / White flowers
Sound: Re-mix generated from “Lakmé – Flower Duet” by Leo Delibes.
Object: Ax stuck in wood
The concept we explore with this pairing is to seek the sensory counterpoint to provoke conflicting emotions. From the smoky perfume of the birch with the shy white flowers that match the Cava in a contrasting and unexpected way, to the abrupt image of an ax stuck in the middle of a table, which in turn opposes the romantic re-mix of Lakme .
